Let’s talk about UK staycations. When you have disabled twins, planning a family holiday can feel like a daunting task. While the idea of traveling overseas isn’t off the table for us, it does come with a hefty amount of preparation and careful consideration — far more than most typical families might need. That’s why, for now, we’ve been focusing on UK travel and staycations, and let me tell you, it’s been a revelation!
I’ll admit, at first, I was a bit disheartened by the idea of sticking to UK breaks. I had visions of beachside resorts, exploring new cultures, and soaking up the sun in some far off destination. But as it turns out, I needn’t have worried. Our UK adventures have opened my eyes to the incredible beauty and charm that lies just a stone’s throw from our front door.
Staycations: The Hidden Gems of the UK
Our family has explored some absolute gems within the UK — places that we might never have considered if we’d been jet-setting around the world. What’s more, we’ve found that there’s so much more still more to see and do than we could ever fit into one lifetime! From charming countryside retreats to bustling city escapes, the UK offers a diverse range of experiences that have allowed us to make precious memories without the added stress of international travel with disabled children.
One of the best parts of staying within the UK is that we’ve been able to discover gorgeous locations less than an hour away from home. No need to worry about language barriers, travel documents, modes of transport, overseas healthcare systems, or any of the other complexities that come with being abroad. It’s been a breath of fresh air to focus on the fun of the holiday rather than the logistics.
Our Favorite UK Staycations So Far
Some of our favorite trips have been right here in the North West. We’ve had an absolute blast glamping in Lancashire and we’ve also enjoyed a city break in Harrogate, staying in a tiny home that added a fun, yet cozy twist to our trip. And of course, we’ve spent countless days exploring the countryside and natural beauty around Greater Manchester, all while enjoying the convenience of having a city base.
These trips have not only been incredibly enjoyable but have also shown us just how much there is to explore within a short drive from home. It’s easy to overlook the treasures that are right on your doorstep, but these staycations have reminded us that adventure doesn’t always require a passport.
What’s Next? More UK Adventures!
As a family, we’re excited to continue our UK adventures. We’re currently planning some camping trips and short road trips around the North West, and we can’t wait to see what other wonders we discover. There’s something special about finding new places to love in your own country, and we’re eager to keep exploring and making memories.
So, if you’re considering a staycation but aren’t sure if it’ll measure up to an overseas trip, take it from us—you might just be surprised by the incredible experiences waiting for you close to home. The UK is full of hidden gems, and there’s no better time to start discovering them!
