Solo Female Travel – Bergamo

Bergamo in the Lombardy region of Italy might not be an immediate thought when you think about a trip to Italy. It’s often overshadowed by bigger, more modern cities, but it’s a truly spectacular city. Milan Bergamo airport is 6km from the city centre, and you can use either taxis or busses to get to the city without any difficulties.

Once you’re in Bergamo, one of the most rewarding things to do is to simply wander. The old cobbled streets, dramatic churches, and street markets easily transport you back a few hundred years and it’s easy to get sucked in by the city’s charm. As the city is on top of a hill, you’ll be rawarded by stunning views of the surrounding countryside as you explore. Once you’ve finished exploring, there are plenty of delightful pizzerias and traditional Italian eateries to choose from where you can sit outside and people watch over a Margherita and Limoncello.

The city is just as magical in the evenings as it is during the day, and there’s nothing quite like an evening stroll along the cobbled streets before you settle into your accommodation for the night.

Safety

Bergamo feels safe, and doesn’t pose much threat to a solo female traveller. As always, it’s wise to keep a close hold of any valuables and watch out for pickpockets in crowded, and more touristy areas, but generally the crime rates are very low. Even at night, this is a city that feels safe to walk around as long as you stay aware of your surroundings! There are many places to stay in the city, and just outside. If you choose to stay just outside the city then walking to the centre (which is up a big hill) feels safe. Be aware that this can be quite a rural walk so make sure you have taken safety precautions just in case you ever need them.
